2023's Best No-Show Socks

We all know the importance of a good running shoe, but a quality sock can mean the difference between a PR and limping across the finish line. Good running socks are seamless, moisture wicking and won’t fall off. Some runners prefer to wear higher socks for this reason, but furious races and fashion-forward joggers need seamless socks that stay put. We’ve rounded up the best running socks to keep you running year-round.

The 7 best seamless running socks of 2023

How to Choose?

The biggest issue with socks of any length is getting a pair that won’t fall off and bunch up in your shoe during your run. While this is less of an issue with larger socks, the closer they get to invisible, the more likely they are to fall off and get in your way.

When looking for an invisible sock that will stay put, you need to make sure it has three key components: a heel cup, which allows the sock to fit snugly around the heel without leaving loose fabric on the outside; a heel tab, which sits above the heel of the shoe and provides extra cushioning to prevent rubbing; and an arch block, which is a compression band around the arch of the foot that helps prevent rubbing, slipping and blisters. Moisture-wicking materials and a seamless toe area also help keep your socks in place without causing discomfort while you run.

How we chose

To find the best seamless running socks, we used a combination of our own experience testing socks over the years, as well as feedback from people who have worn and loved these styles. We chose socks that work for all speeds, foot sizes, preferences and weather, because we know that no matter how cold it gets, your ankles need to breathe. While they’re barely visible over your shoes, they’re guaranteed to stay in place during your longest, fastest and toughest runs.

1. Hidden Comfort Socks

Balega’s Hidden Comfort socks are like vanilla ice cream - simple, yet comforting and reliable. This is a medium cushioning sock that has no compression, so it won’t feel tight.

The lack of compression doesn’t mean they’ll fall off, though. With the heel tab and seamless moisture-wicking material, these socks stay put and prevent blisters. They come in many fun colors and can take you from your daily runs to competition days.

2. Ultralight Socks

Ultralight socks offer the same soft feel as Hidden Comforts, but with a tighter fit and a little less bulk. They have a little more compression throughout the foot and arch blocking that helps keep the sock still against the foot, but they are looser than most compression socks. Because they are lighter, they are ideal for summer running and make a good running sock.

3. Maxus Zero

This Swift wick sock offers the best of both worlds with a super cushioned bottom and a lightweight, breathable top. There’s some compression around the mid-foot, which keeps it from twisting, but it’s relaxed in the toe area so it doesn’t feel trapped and tight. For those who like a little more cushioning, this is a great option to give you more comfort on your footbed without compromising breathability.

4. Aspire Zero

If you want a super low profile running sock to wear every day, this Swift wick fits the bill. It sits lower on the ankle than most running socks, and you barely feel it on your foot. There’s not a lot of stretch, which helps prevent slippage, but the material is soft and doesn’t chafe, even on long runs. It’s a brilliant choice to wear spiked shoes because of the snug fit, and the outside of the sock has a bit of grip, which keeps it in place.

5. Men’s Multi-Pack

Many running socks cost more than $14 for a single pair, but this Saucony pack offers six pairs for that price. While they don’t last as long as the high-end socks, they’re still perfect for your regular runs. They have a little tongue to keep them from falling off and a slight compression in the arch to keep them in place.

6. Merino 10 Ultra Light

Merino wool may make you think of comfy hiking socks, but wool isn’t a heat trap-it’s a temperature regulator, which means it’s great for all seasons (even summer). These Feetures merino wool socks are super thin and light, and they fit perfectly with arch compression.

7. Low Ankle Cushioned Socks

If you want a little more cushioning and a more generous fit, but you’re still interested in wool, you might like this model from SmartWool. They use a targeted cushioning design, which gives you the extra cushioning where you need it (heels, ball of the foot, toes and toe) while leaving the top of the sock light and breathable. This gives you all the comfort you need without making your feet feel crowded and hot.
