As travel picks up after two years of pandemic, hotels are doing their part to attract tourists with unique programming, select storytelling and personalized experiences that prioritize health and safety as much as fun.
The new partnership between Santa Monica’s well-known hotel, Shutters on the Beach, and air purifier brand Molekule is the best example. Shutters is partnering with Molekule to have the brand’s popular air purifiers installed in its hotel rooms, giving guests a way to control and improve their indoor air quality.
Shutters - and neighboring Hotel Casa del Mar - are making Molekule’s Air Pro and Air Mini+ purifiers available to guests. Both air purifiers are FDA-cleared and feature PECO (photo electrochemical oxidation) technology that traps and removes particles as small as 0.1 nm (germs and pet dander).
Besides helping reduce dust, bacteria and allergens, Molekule says its line of air purifiers can also destroy SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid, allowing you - literally to breathe a little easier.
Effective in both private rooms and public spaces, Molekule’s air purifiers also help eliminate pollutants commonly found in hotels because of cleaning chemicals and lack of ventilation in older buildings.

Molekule’s line of air purifiers is not new-the brand launched its first device in 2017-but the company says it has had to pivot in recent years to meet the needs of businesses and consumers.
“With people spending more time indoors than ever before, there’s a heightened awareness of the daily air we breathe,” Jonathan Harris, CEO of Molekule, tells Rolling Stone. “We estimate air quality to be 2-5 times more polluted than outdoor air, so it was important for our consumers to have a line of defense during Covid-related closing and reopening policies, or natural disaster events like fire and smoke.”
Besides Shutters and Casa del Mar, Molekule air purifiers are currently available at the InterContinental Hotel in San Francisco and at boutique properties such as Scribner’s Catskill Lodge in Hunter, N.Y., Ocean House in Rhode Island and Mauna Kea in Hawaii. They also installed Molekule purifiers in major venues, with the brand named the “official air purification partner” of Madison Square Garden in 2019.

Harris says it was a simple decision to work with the hotels, ensuring a safe and comfortable stay for guests. “Hotels came to us with customer concerns about room turnover rates with other guests, the use of cleaning chemicals in rooms, air quality as it relates to guests’ sleep experiences, and more,” he explains. “We view air quality as an amenity just as important as traditional surface cleaning, as pollutants and harmful VOCs can linger in the air. We saw the need for clean indoor air solutions beyond just the home.”
Clean air as a hotel service? It’s a good idea for 2022. Yet most hotels aren’t installing just any commercial air purifier in their rooms - Shutters says it chose Molekule’s air purifiers for their clean look and the way they easily blend into the hotel’s existing decor. Harris (obviously) agrees.
“Molekule air purifiers are beautiful works of art that are seen in your home or business,” he says, noting that the units look great in any room, conference room or spa.
“Covid and the challenges of working remotely have certainly changed the way we do things,” Harris says, “but we’re inspired to let people know more about what’s in their air and give customers a clear picture of their air quality.”
