BUY NOW: Meta's Quest 2 VR headset gets a $100 price hike on August 1

0

Meta’s Quest 2 virtual reality (VR) headset is undoubtedly the most popular VR headset on the market, but starting August 1, it will be $100 more expensive. The price of the 128GB version will increase to $399 and the 256GB version to $499. Prices for accessories and refurbished Quest 2 headsets will also increase, though it’s not clear by how much.

To offset the cost increase, Meta will offer anyone who buys a new Quest 2 after Aug. 1 a free copy of the Beat Saber rhythm game through the end of 2022.

Meta announced the price changes in a blog post and said the increase will help the company invest in new research and product development within the VR industry. The Quest 2 debuted in the fall of 2020 as the Oculus Quest 2 before Meta changed its name the following year.

In 2021, Meta replaced the 64GB version with a 128GB version at the same starting price of $299. The headset reportedly sold 14.8 million units by June 2022.

Retailers like GameStop, Best Buy, Target, and Walmart are still honoring the Quest 2’s current $299 starting price, so now is the time to buy one if you’ve been hesitant. Meta is also still selling refurbished Quest 2 headsets for $249.

Is the Quest 2 still worth buying after the price increase?

While no one is a fan of price increases, the Quest 2 will still be the most practical headset to buy for new VR users when the price increases in August. While there are competitors with more impressive specs, like the $749 Valve Index, they often require a powerful gaming PC or are significantly more expensive, like the $1,300 Vive Focus 3.

Sony plans to release a new PlayStation VR headset sometime next year, but it will need to be connected to a PlayStation 5 console for it to work, making a full setup more expensive than the Quest 2. The Quest 2 also has built-in sensors, eliminating the need for extra wires or external devices to play.

Another key factor in favor of the Quest 2 is the selection of games. The Quest 2 features exclusive VR games and interactive experiences like Resident Evil 4 VR and Vader Immortal, which are not playable in competing headsets. Those new to VR will also be able to find new apps through Quest’s store.

The $100 increase is disappointing, but if you’re looking to get into VR, the Quest 2 is still the best headset in its price range.
