Royal Sovereign has issued a recall for portable air conditioner models that pose a fire and burn hazard. The reason is a faulty drain motor in the units that can ignite the plastic housing. As a result, the malfunction can lead to fires and injuries. The company is aware of at least one death that occurred after using one of the faulty air conditioners. If you have any of the recalled Royal Sovereign/Royal Centurian portable air conditioners in your home, stop using them immediately.

Royal Sovereign International and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) have issued the recall of the air conditioners after receiving 11 reports of fire or smoke during use.

The company says the incidents resulted in more than $1 million in property damage, two injuries and one death. A woman died after smoke-related injuries on Aug. 24, 2016. Her children also suffered injuries after one of the air conditioners included in the recall caught fire.
They include the following model numbers in the Royal Sovereign air conditioner recall: PAC-3012, PAC-3012 RB ARP-3012, ARP-3012 KIT, ARP-3012S, ARP-3014 and ARP-3014 SC. We can find the model numbers on the nameplate attached to the back of the portable air conditioners.
The company sold approximately 33,570 of the air conditioners that are now being recalled. It sold them between March 2008 and August 2014 for about $290. You may have purchased your unit from Amazon, Best Buy, BJ’s Wholesale, Costco, Home Depot or Sears.
What to do if you have a recalled device
If you have one of the Royal Sovereign air conditioners affected by the recall, stop using these portable units immediately. You must unplug them and cut the power cord so that no one else can accidentally use the unit.
The company has set up a site for the recall that provides additional instructions. The company warns that failure to unplug the unit can cause shock, electrocution or death.
Royal Sovereign will offer customers a pro-rated refund, the CPSC release explains. It will consider the age of the portable air conditioner to calculate the amount of refund due. You should contact the company to find out how to get your refund, and how much it entitled you to. There is no other option for the air conditioner recall other than a partial refund.

The Royal Sovereign air conditioners included in the recall are not the only ones that can catch fire while in use. Last year, the CPSC issued another recall involving various air conditioner models that posed burn and fire hazards.
