Finding effective natural or holistic remedies for fibroids

Are you tired of the discomfort or pain resulting from fibroids and the traditional treatment options, which may or may not include a hysterectomy, no longer offer the solutions you are looking for? If so, find out more about the causes and symptoms of fibroids, as well as effective natural or holistic fibroid remedies.

What are uterine fibroids?

We identify fibroids as tumors that can grow on or in the uterus' lining. They are the most common benign tumor of the uterus. Benign means that the tumor(s) are not cancerous. Uterine fibroids can range in size from tiny to very large. They can be one tumor or many tumors in the uterus. These tumors can also be hard to the touch or soft.

What causes uterine fibroids?

Although the exact cause is unknown, women with a family history of fibroids are at greater risk of developing fibroids themselves. The influence of hormones (especially estrogen) can cause fibroids to develop and grow. During pregnancy, the size of these tumors can increase significantly, while a postmenopausal woman may experience a decrease in fibroid size.

Prevalence of Uterine Fibroids

Fibroids are the most common gynecologic tumor. The rate of women of childbearing age with fibroids is 20-25%. Some studies show that the incidence of fibroids in all women may be as high as 75%.

The vast majority of these tumors are benign and only a few (less than 1%) develop into cancer. Although the exact cause is unknown, besides the fact that women with a family history of fibroids are at greater risk, studies have also shown that black women develop fibroids four to six times more often than women of other races.

Symptoms of Uterine Fibroids

Some symptoms associated with fibroids include, but are not limited to, the following;

a. discomfort or pain in the pelvic area

b. An increase in menstrual cycle (soaking two to three pads or tampons in one hour).

c. Blood clots

d. Painful or irregular periods

e. An increased level of menstrual cramps

f. An increased need to urinate (fibroids can put pressure on the bladder)

g. Bloating and increased waist size

h. Constipation (fibroids can put pressure on the rectum).

Fibroids can lead to infertility sometimes and complications during pregnancy for some pregnant women.

How are uterine fibroids diagnosed?

Fibroids are most often identified during a normal pelvic exam. An ultrasound may also identify fibroids and to confirm that they are fibroids and not ovarian cysts, which are fluid-filled sacs found on or in the ovaries. A CT scan can also identify fibroids to a lesser extent.

Treatment of uterine fibroids

1. Traditional medicine

After identifying fibroids, your personal physician will usually decide to simply monitor the fibroids for change by performing an annual ultrasound. For larger or worrisome fibroids, surgery is the next option your doctor will suggest. We performed a myomectomy to remove superficial tumors, leaving the uterus intact.

I surgically removed more serious tumors with a hysterectomy that removes the uterus besides the fibroids - no uterus, no fibroids. Hysterectomy should always be the last resort after we have tried other fibroid treatments. Other surgical methods include coagulation, which deprives the fibroids of the blood that the tumors need to grow. This deprivation of blood supply causes the fibroids to shrink.

With myomectomy or other surgeries (besides hysterectomy), the recurrence rate of fibroids is 12-64%, because they do not treat the root cause of the fibroids.

2. Natural or Holistic Treatments

Unlike traditional fibroid treatments, natural fibroid treatments seek to treat the root cause of fibroids to prevent recurrence and provide a holistic approach that is always the best option for uterine fibroid treatment and healing.

Natural remedies to treat fibroids do not come with the side effects associated with traditional medicine. Surgery is always risky, even if the uterus remains intact, and comes with side effects and being expensive. Holistic remedies are inexpensive yet effective in the treatment of fibroids and have shown excellent results for many women with fibroids.
