A salmonella outbreak attributed to contaminated chicken has led to another food recall. While some recalls are simply precautionary measures, this one is different. So far, nearly 30 people have become ill in a dozen states. And of that group, about 11 people have been hospitalized.

Which stores are selling the recalled food?
The chicken in question is from Serenade Foods, a company in Indiana. Over 60,000 pounds of chicken - frozen and raw - are included in the recall.
Serenade Foods’ chicken is available at a few stores, including Walmart, Aldi, Save-A-Lot and Food 4 Less. We can find the recalled products under the following brands: Dutch Farms Chicken, Milford Valley Chicken and Kirkwood.
The recalled chicken was available in several Midwest and East Coast states. These states include Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Vermont, Wisconsin and West Virginia.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, the food recall involves the following products:
Individually wrapped 5-ounce packages of “Dutch Farms Chicken with Broccoli & Cheese” with lot code BR 1055 and BEST IF USED BY FEB 24 2023.
Individually shrink-wrapped 5 ounce packages of “MILFORD VALLEY CHICKEN WTH BROCCOLI & CHEESE” with lot code BR 1055 and BEST IF USED BY FEB 24 2023.
Box of two 10 oz. Individual packages of “MILFORD VALLEY CHICKEN Cordon bleu”. Lot code reads: “CB 1055 and BEST USED BEFORE FEBRUARY 24, 2023”.
Individually wrapped 5 ounce packages of “KIRKWOOD Raw Stuffed CHICKEN, BROCCOLI & CHEESE” with lot code BR 1055 and BEST IF USED BY FEB 24 2023.

The danger of salmonella
Salmonella is a common bacterial infection that has caused several food product recalls in recent years. According to the CDC, salmonella causes over 1.35 million infections each year. This results in nearly 27,000 hospitalizations and about 420 deaths.
Most often, salmonella outbreaks come from raw chicken, salads and certain types of deli meats.
Symptoms of salmonellosis usually last from four days to a week. Some of the specific symptoms include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. While most people recover on their own within a few days, more severe cases require antibiotics.
Finally, special attention should be paid to the products listed above, as contaminated chicken rarely tastes or smell differently.
