Does marijuana harm young minds?

Many pot users defend marijuana use by saying that, compared to hard drugs, and even alcohol, marijuana seems to do very little harm, and appears to be relatively harmless.

This is in fact a fallacy, and pointing out that one substance is less harmful than another is not a defence of that substance.

There is also interesting evidence that chronic marijuana use can impair intelligence and IQ.

Initially, this was a tough issue to study because many youths who used marijuana also used alcohol and hard drugs, so it was difficult to isolate the resulting effects as those of marijuana. However, with much effort, the researchers finally isolated a clear sign that young people who use marijuana regularly, and over a long period, may experience a long-term decline in IQ.

People who have continued to use marijuana for ten years can actually show an IQ drop of over eight points.

We’re talking about a person becoming less intelligent, which almost never happens in the normal course of things. This has been clearly the result of using this drug.

The effects of marijuana use in adolescence

In the Dunedin study conducted in New Zealand, we observed over a thousand people throughout their lives, from birth. This study began in 1972, and the people involved were carefully tested, regularly and over time, for IQ and ability, as well as other indications of human development.

This study has provided a great deal of information to researchers around the world, but for us, it is important because it provides year-to-year data on a person’s IQ and cognitive abilities. This study reveals that people who use weed during the crucial period of adolescence experience a consistent drop in IQ if that use continues over a considerable period.

But, perhaps, the scariest part of these statistics is that intelligence did not return to normal when marijuana use was discontinued, meaning that the IQ decline caused by marijuana was permanent - marijuana caused permanent damage to the minds of the young people in the study who used it.

To be fair, the IQ decline only occurs when a person is actually addicted to marijuana and uses it regularly. It is unlikely that marijuana used twice a month, for example, would cause permanent damage to intelligence.

However, for chronic marijuana users, there is a genuine cause for concern.

Concentrations of THC (the active ingredient in marijuana) are very high in the marijuana available on the market today, and using such potent marijuana can certainly cause damage to the intelligence of dependent or addicted users.

Keep in mind that people who become addicted to marijuana are usually those who suffer from anxiety or depression, so their addiction to marijuana is more than a recreational, or even physical addiction - it is a psychological addiction, and it can be powerful and difficult to manage.
